Fair Nights at The Sound

Visual Identity & Design System

Overview

Fair Nights at The Sound is a branded concert series presented by The Sound during the San Diego County Fair, where each ticket includes fair admission. I was tasked with developing a visual identity and scalable design system to promote the series and clearly communicate this added value to audiences.

The primary goal was to make the “free fair admission” component immediately recognizable across all marketing touchpoints. This functioned as both a promotional hook and a unifying element across multiple shows with different artists and visual styles.

Process

The project began with a short turnaround and evolving scope. Initial direction included four confirmed shows, with the expectation that more would be added within days. Rather than designing a single static poster, I approached the project as a flexible system that could expand with the lineup.

I developed a distinct visual identity centered around a sunset-inspired color palette and palm tree silhouettes to align with The Sound’s coastal brand while evoking the timing and atmosphere of evening fair events. Typography focused on a retro, timeless feel to reinforce a sense of nostalgia and seasonal energy without feeling overly theme-specific.

To support multiple use cases, I created both vertical and horizontal logo lockups. The vertical version anchors posters and print applications, while the horizontal version adapts for web placements, digital banners, and in-venue screens.

Given tight size constraints for digital placements, I also designed an animated version of the asset with a scrolling lineup to maintain readability without sacrificing visual impact.

All files were built using smart objects, allowing quick updates to lineup information across the different sizes. This ensured consistency while significantly reducing production time as new shows were added.

Beyond the core poster, the identity was extended into a reusable badge system. The “Fair Nights at The Sound” mark was applied as a sticker across individual show assets, reinforcing the promotion without requiring full redesigns for each event.

Results

The final system was approved without revisions and received strong internal feedback for clarity and usability.

The modular design approach allowed the marketing team to quickly scale the campaign as additional shows were confirmed, without requiring new creative for each iteration. The badge system also enabled seamless integration into the existing website, increasing visibility of the fair admission incentive across channels.

By prioritizing flexibility and efficiency, the project reduced ongoing production time while maintaining a cohesive visual identity across print, web, and animated assets.
